Sample data

The sample dataset consists of one raster file of the SRTM* over an area in Tanzania (Africa).

It is in a ArcGIS ASCII grid format (AAIGrid for GDAL) and can be imported in QGIS directly with the open raster command.

Its coordinate system is WGS84 Lat/Lon.

After reading the raster into QGIS a large grey rectangle will be displayed on screen.

  1. Select the raster in the legend (very important)
  2. Go to Plugins -> Raster Colours -> 1-band raster colour (an wait a while for the raster to be read into the plugin!)
  3. See here on ways to produce colour ramps.
  4. Select the colour table that you want to apply to the raster from the dropdown list at the bottom of the dialog window and click 'Close' (see below).
  5. The raster will be coloured with the selected colour table.
